Barmherzige Brüder Krankenhaus Graz hosts the CLASSICA meeting
Graz, 27th & 28th May 2024 – The CLASSICA project team gathered for a highly productive meeting hosted by Barmherzige Brüder Krankenhaus Graz (Hospital St. John of God). Prof. Dr Felix Aigner, MBA, Head of the Department of Surgery at Barmherzige Brüder Krankenhaus Graz and CLASSICA Principal Investigator, graciously facilitated the event and organised a dynamic schedule of activities over the two days.
“The use of AI in Medicine” panel discussion, 27th May 2024 – Prof. Felix Aigner hosted a panel discussion on “The use of AI in Medicine,” featuring a keynote lecture by Prof. Elisabeth Lex of Technische Universität Graz and an introduction by CLASSICA Coordinator Prof. Ronan Cahill. The panel, comprising leading experts in AI in healthcare and CLASSICA team representatives, including Prof. Ronan Cahill and Asst. Prof. Mindy Nunez Duffourc, delved into the transformative potential of AI in medical practice. Special thanks to AI experts Prof. Robert Sucher from Medizinische Universität Graz and Prof. Elisabeth Lex from Technische Universität Graz for their invaluable contributions.
First live test of the CLASSICA AI system during surgery 28th May 2024 – On Tuesday morning, Prof. Aigner and his excellent team performed the first surgery incorporating a live test of our project software for real-time endoscopic characterisation of rectal cancer. This marked a significant milestone for the project, testing the real-time analytics capabilities of the CLASSICA AI system. Joined by Coordinator Prof. Ronan Cahill, our tech experts in Arctur Tomi Ilijas, Samo Eržen, Jernej Cucek, and our Pintail PI Dr Victoria Macarthur. The procedure was live-streamed to the project team both in Graz and abroad. This is an exciting achievement for the project and showcases the collaborative effort between surgeons, lawyers, and AI system developers to advance the field.
CLASSICA plenary meeting 27th & 28th May 2024 – The two-day meeting served as a vibrant hub of discussions, with the project team convening in plenary. Key topics included the results from Study 1 and preparation plans for Study 2. The team is currently finalising the medical device ethics and developments on the AI classifier to validate AI identification of cancer during live surgery. The meeting also addressed critical legal and ethical considerations essential for integrating AI into clinical practice.
The CLASSICA meeting in Graz concluded with a strong sense of progress and collaboration among the team. As preparations for Study 2 advance, the project continues to address important legal, ethical, and technical aspects, ensuring a robust foundation for future developments.
