CLASSICA-OR Software Launched at Beaumont Hospital
Dublin, 7 March 2025 – The CLASSICA project achieved an important milestone with the successful launch of the CLASSICA-OR software at Beaumont Hospital, where its AI-powered classifier was tested live during surgery for the first time.
The procedure was led by Prof. John Burke, Consultant General, Laparoscopic & Colorectal Surgeon and clinical lead for Colorectal Cancer, together with his surgical team. The operation included real-time use of CLASSICA-OR for endoscopic classification of rectal cancer.
The trial team present on site included Prof. Ronan Cahill (CLASSICA Coordinator, UCD / Mater Misericordiae University Hospital), Ed Murphy, and Patrick Boland from the UCD Centre for Precision Surgery. Samo Eržen, CLASSICA project tech manager from Arctur, travelled to Dublin to oversee and support the technical implementation in the operating room.
Both Prof. Burke in Prof. Cahill highlighted the importance of this first live demonstration, noting its potential to inform clinical decisions during complex colorectal procedures and support the objectives of Study 2 within the CLASSICA clinical trial.
With the CLASSICA-OR software now successfully deployed in a clinical setting, the project is ready to advance to the next phase of testing and continue developing AI-supported tools for surgical decision-making.
